Lufthansa has shared an image of its new premium economy product as part of an investor presentation released on Monday.

The airline said the “enhanced” premium economy class would be on Lufthansa’s new B777-9 fleet from the autumn of 2020.

Lufthansa has 20 of the next-generation Boeing aircraft scheduled for delivery between 2020 and 2025, which are also set to feature a new business class seat.

The new premium economy seat is also set to roll out onto Lufthansa Group carrier Swiss’s B777-3ERs in early 2021, and its A340-300s by spring/summer.

Lufthansa introduced its current premium economy seat in 2014:

In that review we mentioned the difficulty of working when the seat in front is reclined. The new seats look as though they recline in a fixed shell to avoid disruption.

Further details about the seat product were not provided.

According to the report, Lufthansa’s revenue per sqm from premium economy is 6 per cent higher than in Business and 33 per cent higher than in economy.

Most airlines now offer the class, with Brussels Airlines currently introducing it onto its A330 fleet.

Notable holdouts include Qatar, Etihad and Emirates, though the latter is expected to launch it in 2020.

Lufthansa announced in the same report yesterday that it would withdraw its low-cost subsidiary Eurowings from the long-haul market, with operations transferred to other network airlines.
