Naira records N7.7 gain against US dollar in first week of 2026 - DAILY POST

The naira recorded a N7.7 gain against the dollar at the official foreign exchange market in the first trading week in January 2026.

The Central Bank of Nigeria’s data showed that between 2nd January and 9th 2026, the naira surged by 0.54 percent to N1,423.17 per dollar, up from N1,430.8479.

Within the period, the naira has experienced mixed sentiments of both gains and losses before settling down at N1,423.17 per dollar on Friday.

Meanwhile, at the black market, the country’s currency has dipped by N10 to N1,490 per dollar in the period under review.

This followed the $0.07 billion increase in the country’s foreign reserves to $45.64 billion as of January 7th, 2026, according to the apex bank data.

CBN in its 2026 economic outlook highlighted “the need to sustain orthodox monetary policy and implementation of the reforms in the FX market to ensure monetary, price, and exchange rate stability”.
