Nigeria’s economy now in terrible shape-Zazzau Emir laments - THE SUN

NOVEMBER 30, 2022

From Noah Ebije, Kaduna

The Emir of Zazzau, Mallam Ahmed Nuhu Bamali has lamented the state of the nation’s economy, saying it is now in a terrible shape compared to the times past.

The Emir noted that when the economy was bouyant, citizens enjoyed free education and other privileges from government.

The first class Emir who spoke on Wednesday at Women Conference, 2022, organised by  Women, models & mentors Foundation said Nigeria must not rely on oil as the only source of its earnings for development.

The Royal father advised that government should go back to agriculture and invest heavily in the sector as it used to be before the discovery of oil, adding that Nigeria is not an oil nation, but gas nation.

“In those days, government was funding education and providing everything. When we started schooling at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, it was N100, N90 for accommodation and N10 for tuition fees.

“How much is it today? You can see how terribly the economy is and how our population is growing. So we have to go back to the drawing board and ensure that you cater for your children.

“I keep telling those that care to listen that entrepreneurship is the key and the way forward. We shall try and be employers of labour, not to go and collect salary that cannot even buy you MTN card for two weeks. This is the danger.

“Today the population of Nigeria is about 220 million people. By 2050, Nigeria will be about 400 million people. Our sources of revenue are gradually disappearing. Oil is nose diving, we  are not getting more oil in this country. Nigeria is a gas country, not a petrol country…

“So we should try as much as possible to understand that the mainstay of our economy is actually agriculture. But we have abandoned agriculture for something that is not sustainable…

“What we are lacking today is mentorship. You don’t have to be a professor to mentor people. We should try as much as possible to impact knowledge to those behind us, especially, those that require some tutelage and technical know how.

“Entrepreneurship is very key, I am passionate about it, especially, when it is an issue that relates to women.

“I am one of those blessed people that have girls as my children – I have four girls and a boy, so I can say I am a father of girls…

“We are encouraging young girls to go into entrepreneurship, especially those graduating from Islamic schools. We always tell them to combine the two education; western and Islamic education.

“It is not about getting a degree. A degree is just a sheet of paper, with the education that you have acquired, how have you applied what you studied? It is not about having multiple degrees, what have you done? What can you do with your hands? That is what matters today, not to be doing things that will not even help you in your own home. We should always try and encourage the young ones, especially women.

“Yesterday and day before yesterday, I mentioned that certain courses in the university should be phased out. I am an advocate of that. Those courses will not fetch you anything.

“Those courses that when you graduate from the university, you will only add to the increasing  number of unemployed graduates.
There is no point going to the university to study something that will not be useful to the society.

“So we are advocating that those courses should be looked at and be replaced with course that can actually take you to the promised land”. The Emir said.
