By Adaku Onyenucheya
Nigerian importers and exporters have commenced direct shipping of cargo from China to the Tin Can Island Port in Lagos, eliminating the high freight costs of transshipment.
The Grimaldi Group unveiled the first direct shipping service connecting Shanghai, China, to Lagos, Nigeria, on January 6, 2024.
The Managing Director of Grimaldi Agency Nigeria and PTML Terminal, Ascanio Russo, announced that the direct shipping route would transport cargo from Shanghai to Lagos in just 27 days, which is an industry-leading transit time.
Russo explained that the service was designed to accommodate various types of cargo, including containers, cars, vans, trucks and heavy equipment, ensuring flexibility for diverse shipping needs.
“This service delivers maximum value to Nigerian importers and exporters by offering competitive freight rates while maintaining Grimaldi’s reputation for reliability,” Russo stated.
He emphasised that the new route eliminates transshipment delays, highlighting its speed, efficiency and advantages in maritime logistics.
“With this direct shipping service, we are addressing key challenges faced by Nigerian importers, such as delays caused by transshipment through other ports. This direct route reduces costs, eliminates risks, and simplifies logistics for businesses in Nigeria. It is a game-changer for trade between China and Nigeria,” Russo said.
He assured customers of premium benefits at Grimaldi’s PTML Terminal, including streamlined handling and priority processing.
He noted that the service further underscored the strategic importance of the PTML Terminal, which has established itself as a premier logistics and transshipment hub in West Africa.
Russo disclosed that Grimaldi Group recently launched the new monthly shipping service with the maiden voyage of Great Cotonou, a state-of-the-art G5-class ro-ro multipurpose vessel.
According to Russo, the vessel is part of Grimaldi’s advanced fleet, integrating cutting-edge technology for efficient cargo handling and reduced environmental impact.
