Lagos is known as the city of aquatic splendor, an acknowledgment of the fact that the city is one of the few along Nigeria’s 853 km (530 miles) coastline with many boastful beaches, lakes, lagoons, and islands. Though Lagos is notorious for its hustle and bustle, the coastline offers an escape from it all. When you need a getaway from the hectic city, you can find solace at the beaches for fun and entertainment, or just sit back, relax and enjoy the splendor of the waves.

Atican Beach

Atican Beach is a private beach which can be accessed from Abraham Adesanya Road, Okun, Ajah, Lagos. The beach is known for its white sand and clean environment. As one of Lagos’ far off beaches, it is less crowded than most others. While the entertainment activities are limited, you can sit back and watch the tides or settle down in a quiet spot to get work done—the ideal getaway for digital nomads. Facilities at Atican Beach include a play area for children, swimming pool and convenient lodging for those looking to spend the night. If you’re feeling peckish, a restaurant and a bar are also available where you can eat Nigerian delicacies, including the famous spicy meat skewer called Suya.

INSIDER TIPUnless you are staying around the Lekki and Ajah Axes, it will take quite a while to get to the beach, especially due to Lagos traffic. It’s best to leave early.

Eleko Beach

Eleko Beach lies off the Lekki-Epe Expressway on Eleko Beach Road, which is about an hour drive from Lekki Phase 1. Even though this is a public beach, it is clean and less crowded than others. Visitors can also enjoy horse riding, sports and kayaking. Refreshments on the beach include grilled seafood: prawns, crabs and fish, and you can savor the taste of tropical life in the form of fresh coconut juice hawked on the beach. The beach also has bamboo huts where visitors can get some shuteye. And you can’t forget the souvenirs! There’s a local art market where souvenirs can be purchased.

INSIDER TIPYou should bring your own food and drinks if you’re planning a trip to Eleko Beach because there are limited fare options.

Elegushi Beach

Elegushi Beach is situated around Ikate area of Lekki, a 10-minute drive from the Admiralty Circle Toll. It is well known for its exquisite restaurants, night clubs, and hangout spots that feature a variety of local foods. You can watch the live performances and jamborees all week. Elegushi Beach is well-known for being the venue of COPA Lagos, a world-famous beach soccer tournament. While you can have a lot of fun at this beach, don’t swim too far into the ocean to avoid the riptides.

Oniru

Oniru is a private beach located at the end of the popular Ligali Ayorinde Street, off of Ajose Adeogun Street in Victoria Island. There are several bars here owned by celebrities for visitors to relax, enjoy music and eat Suya, grilled fish and other Nigeria delicacies. You also have the option of renting tables, chairs and umbrellas instead of going into the bars. At Oniru Beach you can take a dip in the water, ride on horses or and enjoy the sea breeze.

Tarkwa Bay

Tarkwa Bay is an artificial sheltered beach located near the Lagos harbour. Because of its island status, Tarkwa Bay is only accessible by boat or water taxis, and you can catch a boat from the Lagos Marina or Victoria Island. You can also hire a boat from the Lagos Oriental Hotel, although this option might be more expensive. Tarkwa Bay beach offers a lot of activities: football, volleyball, and the water is shallow for novice swimmers. You can also bring along your food and drinks. These are sold on the beach but choices might be limited.

INSIDER TIPItems may be overpriced here so if you decide to buy or rent items like huts, chairs or umbrellas, haggle until you get a price you can settle with.

Whispering Palms

This is a beach resort located in Adijo town, Badagry. You can go by road, though this could take about three to four hours depending on the part of Lagos you are coming from, or get there by boat or ferry, from Fiki Jetty at Ozumba Mbadiwe in Victoria-Island or Tarzan Jetty at Maroko-Foreshore at Lekki (Opposite Maroko Police Station) on Lekki-Epe Expressway. There are several attractions close to Whispering Palms you can explore, including the Badagry Heritage Museum, Town of Badagry First Storey Building as well as the historical Point of No Return Slave route.

La Campagne Tropicana

This beach resort is located at Ibeju-Lekku and can be accessed from Lekki Epe Expressway, off the highway at Ikegun. La Campagne Tropicana. is a stunning, modern beach resort which covers about 60 acres on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The rooms at the resort are designed to showcase African interior designs and décor. Visitors here can enjoy activities such as kayaking, horse riding, swimming in outdoor pools or relaxing in tree houses.

INSIDER TIPThe resort is more expensive than most others: the entry fee and lodging rates are higher than other beaches.

Lekki Leisure Lake

Lekki Leisure Lake is located at Block 1, Plot 3, Okunda Blue Water Tourism Scheme, and you can get there from the Lekki-Epe expressway. This beach offers great outdoor activities and water sports including jet-skiing, quad biking, zip-lining, pedal boating, and others. This resort takes safety very seriously, so parents with children will be more comfortable coming here.

INSIDER TIPYou can’t bring your food or drinks into the resort, so you have to purchase anything you want to eat. Be sure to bring sufficient cash with you.

Ilashe Beach

Ilashe is a peaceful, private beach located at Badagry Creek. Visitors can get to the beach by a boat ride from various jetties in Victoria Island, Ikoyi or Lekki Phase 1. The beach is home to La Manga luxury Resort and Casa Ilashe Resort. Visitors can enjoy Quad bike rides, beach volleyball, beach soccer and swimming at this beach.
