Govt Urged to Revive Economy With Renewable Energy - DAILY TRUST

OCTOBER 14, 2021

By Peter Moses

A professor of Solid-State Physics at the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, Rasaki Kolawole Odunaike, has charged the federal government to adopt renewable and alternative energy as the major source of power in Nigeria towards reviving the collapsing economy.

The don stated this at the 98th inaugural lecture of the OOU in a lecture titled: "My Scientific Inquiry into Solid-State Physics for Sustainability".

Prof Odunaike insisted that Nigeria must divest its power generation from thermal and hydropower sources and fossil fuels to green and clean energy generated from the sun, wind, and water to drive the economy.

He noted that there was an increasing demand for renewable energy as the alternative in Nigeria to replace the epileptic power supply for economic growth and therefore called on the federal government to invest heavily in power generation from renewable energy.

Odunaike lamented that the epileptic power supply in Nigeria had rendered many Nigerians jobless and killed local industries, arguing that, "Renewable and alternative energy projects in many developing countries have demonstrated that renewable energy can directly contribute to poverty reduction by providing the energy needed for creating businesses and employment.

"Renewable and alternative energy technologies can equally make indirect contributions to poverty alleviation and provision of cooking energy, space heating and lighting for artisans."
