The Senate Committee on Land Transport has expressed satisfaction with the level of work done so far by the Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Company on the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge railway line.
The committee gave this commendation on Saturday during an inspection of the project, which saw them taking a ride on some of the modern passenger coaches to be used.
The committee chairman, Senator Abdufatai Buhari, after taking a tour of the project from Ebute Metta to the Abeokuta station and back to Lagos, said the project was almost completed.
He said the rail project would relieve a lot of Nigerians in moving from one place to another and would also take the pressure off the roads.
He said, “Having just passed the appropriation bill about three days ago, we felt we should be here to see the progress being made on the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge rail line.
“We are happy with the progress made so far on the project. It is just two years since the project started and it is supposed to be three years. The project will be completed in April next year.
“Once the Lagos-Ibadan rail is running, it will solve the suffering of the people.”
The senator said after the Lagos-Ibadan rail project was completed, the Ibadan-Kano rail project and others would commence.
Also speaking, the Managing Director, Nigerian Railway Corporation, Mr Fidet Okhiria, said the corporation was working with the contractors to ensure the project was completed on time.
