Botswana central bank hikes policy rate by 160 basis points - REUTERS

OCTOBER 30, 2025

GABORONE, Oct 30 (Reuters) – Botswana’s central bank hiked its monetary policy rate by 160 basis points to 3.5% on Thursday.

Inflation in the Southern African country accelerated to 3.7% year-on-year in September from 1.4% in August.

This month credit rating agency Moody’s downgraded Botswana’s sovereign rating, citing the government’s difficulties adjusting to a downturn in the global diamond market and increasing government debt.

The Bank of Botswana had kept its main lending rate steady for the past six policy meetings.
