The Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council, Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin, says the council has commenced moves to boost technological capacity in local vehicle component manufacturing as the country spends nothing less than $1bn importing spare parts annually.

Osanipin made the disclosure in Abuja on Monday at the training of Engineers on Midas NFX Automotive Software Design Skills bootcamp organised by the Council.

Speaking to journalists, the NADDC DG said, “The NADDC is training about 24 engineers on Midas software design which can scan and provide specification for any vehicle component and we intend to train up to 100 from now to next year.

“There is an urgent need for Nigeria to start the manufacturing of these vehicle components, because every year we spend nothing less than $1bn dollar importing these vehicle components which include bumper, tyres, batteries, oil filter and lights among others.

“The only area we have a grip now is lubricant but we need to get beyond that and provide the capacity to produce other components so we can conserve forex and stimulate the economy,” the NADDC DG said
