Wizz Air plans to launch budget flights to the US - METRO UK
Budget airline Wizz Air — famous for flying across Europe for as little as £16 one-way — is hoping to launch its first-ever transatlantic flights from the UK to the US.
The Hungarian carrier’s subsidiary, Wizz Air UK, which has its HQ at London Luton Airport, filed an application to the US Department of Transportation on January 23, 2026.
Wizz Air cited the Open Skies agreement of 2020, which replaced the UK’s participation in EU-US agreements after Brexit. Essentially, it allows uninterrupted and unrestricted transatlantic flights between the UK and the US.
In a statement, the airline said: ‘Wizz Air UK confirms it has submitted an application to the US department of transportation seeking the necessary approvals to operate services between the UK and the United States.’
It continued: ‘As stated in the application Wizz Air UK plans only charter operations. The matter is subject to regulatory approval.’
If successful, Wizz Air wants to operate flights between the two countries ‘as soon as possible.’
